About Arizona Diamondbacks |
| |
National Basketball Association Team owner Jerry Colangelo (Phoenix Suns) assembled a group that was named “Arizona Baseball Inc. and were awarded a franchise on March 9, 1995. The team began play in the 1998 season. In just three seasons the team was top contenders in the playoffs.
The 2001 season was a magical one for the Diamondbacks. Led by some of the most dominant pitchers in baseball, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, the team posted a 92-70 record and blew by the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS (3-2), the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS (4-1) and advanced into the World Series in just three seasons. In what has been described as one of the most exciting World Series ever, the D-Backs took on the defending champion New York Yankees, beating them in 7 games 4-3 to become the youngest expansion team to win the Fall Classic.
The franchise has won one NL Pennant (2001), four NL West Division Titles (1999, 2001, 2002 & 2007).
The team plays on Chase Field, once known as the Bank One Ballpark or the B.O.B.
